| WALKS | Amberley Church Meet Here | TALKS | ||||
|   Sunday 8th of July meet at entrance gate to Amberley Church. The Church is next to the castle and reminds us that the Lord of the Manor was none other than the Bishop of Chichester. The Bishop, fearing French invasions and peasant rebellions sought and obtained permission from the King to fortify his manor house, thus turning it into a “castle.” |
  Here the Bishops of Chichester sought refuge in their castle from the angry peasants of medieval Sussex. We will explore the ancient streets and the unique history of the "wild brooks." |
|   Amberley Castle is an imposing 14th century stone quadrangular fortress, encasing an older manor house in its south-east corner. Still completely enclosed by a high curtain wall, which is only flanked by a magnificent twin-tower gatehouse to the south and a garderode tower with gun loops to the north. |

|   Amberley has many delightful old cottages, although few of the residents are now country people. |

|   The Black Horse boasts a unique collection of sheep bells, donated many years ago by the family of the last local, traditional shepherd. |
