Saturday 28th Feb 2009  Credit Crunch Local History Sidney Walter Centre
Worthing historian Chris Hare will be running a special history day in Worthing on Saturday 28 February. It’s special because those attending will only be charged £6 for both an illustrated talk and a guided walk. If even that is too much in these straightened times, it is possible to book for both the talk and the walk separately at £3 per session.

The illustrated talk, entitled, Worthing – riot and respectability in a seaside town, will take place at the Sidney Walter Centre in Sussex Road at 11am. Chris will describe the various ways that the people of Worthing sought to regulate the conduct of the town and punish those deemed to have transgressed the morality of the community. He will explain what ‘rough music’ entailed and how on several occasions in the nineteenth century, serious riots took place when the people felt that justice had not been seen to be done. The talk will include discussion of the notorious Skeleton Army riots that lead to mounted Dragoon Guards being drafted into Worthing when the local police lost control.
The talk, including time for questions is due to end at 12.30pm.

In the afternoon, starting at 2pm. Chris will be leading a guided walk around the town’s most historic areas, including its neglected back streets and twittens. Some of the buildings on the walk will be familiar, but others, secluded and off the main thoroughfares are likely to prove a surprise to even long-term residents.
The walk will begin opposite The Swan public house and is due to end at 3.30pm.

The day is being organised through the Sussex Archaeological Society, and all bookings must be through the Society. To check for availability, telephone Lorna Gartside on (01273) 405737, or email members@sussexpast.co.uk
