| WALKS | Washington Frankland Arms Meet Here | TALKS | ||||
|   In geological terms, Washington has everything: here the chalk, greensand and gault clay meet to create “a region in one village.” The history of the parish was affected accordingly, with the wealthier residents choosing the best land for their homes. We will untangle this complex history and visit forgotten sites of historic interest. |

  The Frankland Arms is a 200 year old coaching inn, ideally located in Washington Village at the heart of the South Downs. The inn has beamed ceilings, log fires in the winter and a delightful garden in the summer. Hilaire Belloc – a great drinker of ale, thought he had tasted no better beer that “the swipes they serve at the Washington Inn.” Although Michell’s Ale is no longer brewed, the Frankland Arms is a fitting start to this walk around a most fascinating village. |

|   These Lime Kilns were amongst some of the largest in Sussex, only being outsized by the giant kilns at Amberley. Few people know of these remains, but we will visit them, along with other remnants of Washington’s forgotten history. |
