| WALKS | West worthing and Heene St Botolphs Church Meet Here | TALKS | ||||
|   Sunday 6th May 2:30pm Meet outside St. Botolphs Church Church. St.Botolph’s Church was built in 1877 and became the focus of the “West Worthing” development, which was to over-lay the old hamlet of Heene. |
Why were Heene people considered so disreputable that a wall had to be built to keep them out of Worthing? Find out on this walk. We will also visit the old fisherman’s quarter in New Street/ Prospect Place and discuss the notorious “Skeleton Army” riots. |
|   The Worthing Wall was put up on the orders of the Worthing Town Comissioners in the early nineteenth century, the purpose being to keep the undesirable people of Heene out of the “select and fashionable” resort of Worthing. |
